Sunday 23 June 2019 - The Body and Blood of Christ

Genesis 14:18-20.  Melchizadek, priest and king, offers bread and wine to God in thanksgiving for the blessing of peace. In Christian tradition, this is seen as prefiguring the bread and wine of the Eucharist. Melchizadek’s priesthood points to the perfect priesthood of Christ.

1 Corinthians 11:23-26. The earliest account of the origin of the Eucharist. When we celebrate this together, we do not ‘merely’ make Christ present, but we re-enact and re-present his saving death.

Luke 9:11-17. The Feeding of the 5000 is one of the best-known passages in the gospels. To demonstrate the Eucharistic significance of the event, Luke uses the same language we find at the Last Supper and at Emmaus: Jesus took, blessed, broke and gave.
