Eastertide: The Ascension of the Lord

Updated: May 22, 2023

The Ascension of the Lord is a significant event in the Christian faith. It marks the moment when Jesus Christ, after his resurrection from the dead, ascended to heaven in the presence of his disciples.

The event of Ascension is described in the Bible in the book of Acts, chapter 1, verses 9-11:

"And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

The Ascension is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it fulfilled Jesus' promise to his disciples that he would return to his Father in heaven. Secondly, it marked the end of Jesus' earthly ministry and the beginning of his heavenly reign. Finally, it gave the disciples hope and reassurance that Jesus was still with them in spirit and would one day return.

The Ascension is celebrated by Christians around the world on the 40th day after Easter Sunday, which is known as Ascension Day. On this day, many churches hold special services to commemorate the event, and some also hold processions or other celebrations.

The Ascension of the Lord is a reminder to Christians of the power and majesty of God and of the hope that they have in Jesus Christ. It is a time to reflect on the promises of God and to look forward to the day when Jesus will return in glory to establish his kingdom on earth.
