Holy Week: Holy Saturday

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Holy Saturday is the day that falls between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. For Catholics, it is a day of waiting and anticipation as they reflect on the death of Jesus Christ and prepare for his resurrection.

In Catholic tradition, Holy Saturday is a day of silence and stillness, as the Church remembers the time that Jesus spent in the tomb. Many Anglo-Catholic churches keep their altars bare and their bells silent on this day, as a sign of respect and mourning.

Despite the solemnity of Holy Saturday, there is also a sense of hope and anticipation in the air. We believe that Jesus will rise from the dead on Easter Sunday, and this fills them with a sense of joy and excitement.

One of the key traditions of Holy Saturday is the Easter Vigil, which takes place in the evening. The Easter Vigil is the most important liturgy of the Catholic year, and it is marked by the lighting of the Paschal candle, a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Paschal candle represents the light of Christ, which shines in the darkness of the world.

The Easter Vigil is a time of great joy and celebration, as we welcome the risen Christ into their lives and renew their commitment to their faith. It is a time for baptism and the reception of new members into the Church, as well as the renewal of baptismal vows for existing members.
